DIY hints

A few things worth knowing.

Forty years of straight answers, distilled into the basics that save time, money and a redo.

Measure twice, order once

Work out run lengths and board coverage before ordering. For decking at 450 mm centres, allow for cuts, waste and a consistent gap between boards.

Match the timber to exposure

Outdoor and in-ground work needs the right durability class or H-rating. Treated pine suits posts and retaining; hardwoods suit weathered decks.

Let timber acclimatise

Store boards flat and let them settle to site conditions before fixing. It reduces cupping, gaps and movement after installation.

Seal the ends

End-grain soaks up moisture fastest. Seal cut ends on decking and exposed timber to extend service life.

Plan fall and drainage

Even a low deck needs water to run away. Over concrete, the Patio Deck Kit Height Adjuster lets you build in a small fall without lifting the whole deck.
